(Unfortunately, my camera was dead the day we did the sense of taste, so there are no pictures!)
Taste and smell work together (and in a similar way).
The molecules from the food go into our taste buds. The nerves around the taste buds bring this as a message to the brain. The brain figures out what we are eating= something sweet, sour, salty, or bitter.
There are different sets of taste buds for each kind of taste. The taste buds all the way in back of our tounge, are for bitter food. On the two upper sides, are the Sour taste buds. Right under that are the taste buds for salty foods. And on the tip of tounge are our sweet foods taste buds.
We got to try tasting lemon juice, vinger, salt water and sugar. We had to decide what category each of these fell under: sweet, sour, bitter, or salty. We were able to figure it out by using our tounge and not even being told what we were going to be tasting. We loved the sugar water ofcourse! (we even tried experimenting. We tested out our taste buds to see what part of our tounge would help us best with tasting the sweet sugar. We first tried it in the way back- we were able to taste it, but it wasnt such a strong taste. Then we tried it in the front of our tounges. We discovered that the taste buds for sweet foods were located here because the sweet taste was much stronger.)
